How to Make a Rolling Shelf

time2010/09/29

The rolling shelf ?is a modern take on the flip shelf. The flip shelf allows you to open up a shelf if larger items need to be stored. The rolling shelf allows you to store larger items by rolling aside a portion of the shelving. Creating a rolling shelf is simple, particularly if the shelving unit has already been built.
Instructions
Decide on a shelf that will be converted to a rolling shelf. This could be part of an existing shelving unit or an add-on to a newly build shelving unit. Make marks on the shelf itself where the rolling shelf will be installed. The shelf should be an even measurement, down to an inch, so 10 inches, 12 inches or 20 inches long.
Draw a straight line across the shelf where the cut will be made using the marks as guidance. Use the square to make sure it is even. Draw a straight line across the shelf where the rolling shelf will start and where it will stop.
Cut the shelf where the lines are drawn, until a piece of the shelf can be removed. Remove it from the shelving unit. Sandpaper the edges of the shelving unit smooth.
Measure the length of the piece removed from the shelf. From one end, measure one inch inward and make a mark. Continue this 1 inch pattern until the piece has been covered in marks. Connect the marks on the shelf’s width, creating long lines. For example, if the shelf measures 15 inches, make 14 marks so 15 sections have been made.
Use the saw to cut out the sections and sandpaper the edges smooth. Place the pieces close together and line them up closely, as if they had not been cut.
Measure the cotton canvas, so it has the same width as the cut-out shelf. The length should be the length of the cut-out shelf plus an additional 7 to 10 inches. Cut out the cotton canvas with scissors.
Apply wood glue to the top surface of the shelving pieces just cut in steps 4 and 5. Line up the cotton canvas and place it on top of the pieces, leaving no space between the wooden cut-out shelving pieces. They should be pushed together tightly. Let it dry before continuing.
Apply glue to the remaining section of the cotton canvas on the same side as the wooden blocks have been attached. Line up the cotton canvas with the shelf end in the shelving unit, where the rolling shelf will be installed. Before applying it and pressing down, ensure the first wooden section lines up with the end of the shelf. Apply pressure when ready. Let it dry with the rolling shelf rolled slightly together for more support.
Unroll the shelf when it has dried. The shelf should unroll and match the cut out made earlier, as no major adjustments has been made to the cut-out shelf. Decorate the shelving unit as desired.
